Yuichi Onishi

Born in Kumano, Mie Prefecture, in 1993, Yuichi Onishi graduated from Nagoya University of the Arts in 2016. He lives and works in Japan, between Seto and Tajimi, two historic centres of ceramic production. His work explores the notion of inner landscapes, giving sculptural form to sensations, memories and images drawn from his personal experience. His organic silhouettes and delicately textured surfaces evoke natural formations and imaginary landscapes. Colour plays an essential role in his practice, particularly a pale celadon glaze that he develops using Nachiguro stone, a stone found in his native region. His sculptures combine a refined sensitivity to materials with a deeply contemplative quality.
